A ham and cheese toastie is at its best when the bread is cooked slowly enough to turn deep golden while the cheese has time to melt. Mature cheddar gives plenty of flavour without needing a long ingredient list.
This is an easy option for a quick lunch at home or in self-catering ski accommodation. Serve it on its own, with tomato soup, or with a little mustard or chutney on the side.
Ingredients
- 4 slices White bread
- 120g sliced Ham
- 120g Mature cheddar, grated
- 30g softened Butter
Method
- Butter one side of each slice of bread.
- Place two slices butter-side down on a board. Divide the ham and mature cheddar between them, then top with the remaining bread, butter-side facing up.
- Heat a large frying pan over a medium-low heat. Add the toasties and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the undersides are crisp and golden.
- Turn carefully and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes, pressing gently with a spatula, until the second side is golden and the cheese has completely melted.
- Cut each toastie in half and serve immediately.
